Holiday Reminders and Safety Tips

Holiday Reminders

During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to overlook certain safety precautions to help keep your family and property safe. Below are a few helpful tips:

  1. Please be sure to always arm your home alarm systems as your head out for your holiday errands, or to your holiday parties and festivities.
  2. Residents are also encouraged to remember to always keep vehicles locked at all times, never leave the keys in the ignition, never leave valuables in the vehicle in plain view, and always arm your automobile and home security alarm systems.
  3. Do not place outgoing mail in your mailbox but rather drop it in a mailbox. (There is a mailbox on Beman Woods Way across from the ACA offices)
  4. Report all suspicious activity to the police. The non-emergency number is 301-279-8000 and the ACA surveillance is 301-299-1518.
  5. Sign up to receive urgent email alerts, updates and notifications from Montgomery County at alert.montgomerycountymd.gov.

Solicitors

The holiday season tends to be a very active time of year for door to door solicitors and charities. We would like to remind our residents that, to the extent permissible by law, soliciting is not permitted in Avenel. In the event that any owner is subjected to door to door solicitation do not engage the solicitor, and please immediately contact our Surveillance department at 301-299-1518.

Tips to Prevent Theft of Packages

Montgomery County police have some tips to prevent theft of packages delivered to your residence. For the full length version, click here. An abbreviated version is below:

  • Know when your package will be delivered by signing up for notification service(s).
  • Ask a neighbor to pick up your package if you will not be home during delivery.
  • Require packages to be signed for when delivered.
  • Provide delivery instructions, such as side porch or garage.
  • Insure your package.
  • Choose the delivery address wisely; i.e. to an attended location, to a carrier location or in-store pick-up.

Holiday Gifts / Tips

For those residents wishing to leave holiday gifts/tips for the Potomac Disposal staff please DO NOT place gifts/tips in, or around, your garbage bins. There have been reports of holiday gifts/tips being stolen from those homeowners that have left their gifts/tips in their garbage bins in the past.

If you wish to wish to leave holiday gifts/tips for the Potomac Disposal staff, please feel free to drop off any gifts/tips to the ACA offices. It is advised to give any monetary gifts/tips in the form of a check made payable to “Potomac Disposal”. Potomac Disposal will divide any tips among the driver and helper.

For residents who prefer to make the checks payable directly to the driver and helper, their names are Joseph Tyree and Dan Cooper. The ACA will forward any gifts received on to Potomac Disposal.
